Discourse (the platform this forum is running on) has many, many features—but you don’t need to learn everything at once. A few simple steps will help you get set up.
1. Customize your account
Go to your preferences.
Here you can:
- Upload an avatar
- Edit your profile information
- Control notifications and emails
- Adjust how the forum looks and behaves
2. Explore discussions
Browse current topics here:
Latest discussions
You can also use Categories in the menu to explore by subject.
3. Join the conversation
Reply to any topic that interests you, or start a new one when you’re ready.
Use the
Like button to show appreciation for posts you find helpful or interesting.
4. Chat
Quick, informal conversation happens in Chat, not in a discussion thread.
Open it using the chat icon in the top menu, or go to:
/chat
Discussion threads are still used for longer philosophical posts.
5. Watch for notifications
When someone replies to you or mentions you, a notification will appear at the top right of the screen.
Click it to jump straight to the reply.
You can control how often you receive notifications and emails in your preferences.
6. Need help?
If something seems confusing, ask in Site Feedback or contact the staff via the About page.
7. More Tips & Tricks
For a more comprehensive guide, Jeff Atwood’s original Discourse New User Tips and Tricks, though it’s 10 years old, is still mostly relevant.
