Is Morality Overrated ?

So, here it’s important to know, how we decide if someone or something is good or bad? is it because of the intrinsic nature of the thing or a person, or we make our judgements in relativity. If someone is telling you that they make objective or independent decisions while being part of the society, they are clearly lying or they could just be ignorant or unaware perhaps.

At the end of the day, you think this is good or bad in comparison to something that you already know or something you have already experienced of. So this kind of establishes that truth is formed purely because of the references we have in terms of experiences or something we already know.

There’s another layer to it, like we know now we kind of make hypotheses largely because of availability heuristics or, in simple words, based on the information that is conveniently available, so when we lecture people about morality, do we really mean that this is objectively wrong/right thing to do or do we just think that meh this is in my favor it’s more convincing it should be done ?

Morality is overrated - Ethics, less so.

Morality is a well-studied if not well-developed field. It begins in earnest with religion although there are a number of nontheistic moral systems out there. We’ve been at it for generations and we’re still in the dark. Foremost of our problems is the is-ought gap (re David Hume). There’s a disconnect between God, human nature on one side and morality on the other.

We do possess a moral compass but it hasn’t been fully worked out yet. So we’re flying with a faulty navigational instrument. Expect errors.

Morality can be/has been suspended on numerous occasions and what resulted was unpalatable. On the flip side morality has descended into absurdities like being stoned to death for working on a particular day.

I don’t think morality is overrated. IMHO it’s not that.
