I am a litte uncertain how to start threads on this new site. As a basic member I am sure that I can be involved in others’ discussion but unsure if I am able to raise topic threads. Of course, I am aware that philosophy discussion is about collaborative thinking so of I am unable to raise questions that doesn’t mean being excluded.
However, at this stage I am uncertain about the varying levels of membership and who is able to create threads. At the moment I have only basic membership and not sure what this enables me to discuss. I am sure that I can be involved in some discussions but a bit unclear about whether I can initiate thread questions. It is just a bit disappointing if the site becomes elitist rather than an open forum for generating discussions from those who may be at the lower end of the hierarchy of wealth. It is not clear what one has to pay, if at all, and whether this is necessary for creating threads.
I am not meaning to be awkward but I am just a little confused what basic membership on the new site entails and its hierarchy.i don’t know if others are having similar issues, or if it is just me and how far it comes down to AI in the programming of the site.
You’re not really blocked from doing anything, and there is no more elitism here than at the Old Place.
The only subscriber (“TPF Supporter”) privileges are cosmetic, e.g., a custom avatar. I make exceptions for people who can’t afford it; if you let me know privately I’ll make it so you can change your avatar.
Trust levels exist mainly to limit spam from new accounts or limit damage by malicious new members.
“Basic member” is the default membership status of most members on the site and doesn’t mean very much. I thought I had changed the name.
You are in fact more privileged than some of the members here, because when you signed up I added you to the Legacy Members group for trusted members of the old site. Hierarchy is valuable to some extent—trusted members should be permitted to do more than new members.
No AI is involved in decisions about individual memberships (nor in moderating decisions, incidentally)—we use AI as an intelligent spam filter and for optional tools for members such as proofreading.
Thank you for your reply and it was helpful.I think that the problem was that I was unable to see certain functions because the tone was not that visible on the screen of my phone. I am sorry for moaning as I was upset but calmed down. Now, I am happy that I will be able to use the site.
Stupid question: how do you put images/graphs? Yes, I did notice the “picture” sign. Do you have to first put them on your computer and then upload them. In the older system it was to copy the link. Can this be done now or do I have to first save the image?
