I wonder if a “sandbox” category should be created for the first post of new posters. I just lost time on a “the ground of existence etc.” that was destroyed by Jamal for AI I supposed (me2) and I see another one about “life” etc. with an answer of the same sort.
Another solution would be to allow opening a subject only after 10 non-AI posts.
Yes, we should probably do something. I’ve been avoiding it because anything we do to solve it introduces friction for new members—I’d prefer the experience to be smooth and easy.
But we don’t live in a perfect world, and there are barbarians at the gates. So what to do? There are options:
Trust level permission: e.g., TL1 required to create topics, preventing drive-by AI posts
Staff approval required up to a certain trust level
First N posts require approval
Sandbox + category permissions
I don’t like the sandbox idea, just because it’s complex. The other options are simple: just a single setting in each case.
this one is complex but just for you : first N posts AI trained by you automatic aprouval with a difficult for AI appeal if they are real people. (btw: I’m Attila :D)
Just an update to say that this is the option I implemented. Topics posted by users below TL2 have to be approved by staff. TL2 usually takes a few weeks of activity to get to.
I think that’s an excellent idea. People tend to pay more attention to rules they don’t like if they know that there is an active enforcement programme.
