I appreciate that this forum is a free, community-driven platform where participation is voluntary, I want to share some constructive feedback regarding how current moderation policies impact user experience and the overall spirit of open discussion. Recently, I spent significant time writing a thoughtful contribution to an active thread, only to have the entire topic locked and removed shortly after. This baffled me as I didnt see anything wrong with it. Having effort erased because a thread was flagged after the fact is frustrating. It disincentivizes meaningful participation and runs counter to what should be ideally a space for open dialogue and exploration among free thinkers.
In reviewing the TOS, several conditions strike me as overly restrictive—specifically, the rule permitting threads to be flagged for “general musing, rambling thoughts, or vague writing without a core argument.” Evaluating whether a post is “low quality” or “vague” is inherently subjective. What one moderator or member considers a low-effort post, another may view as a valid exploratory idea worth unpacking. What was the case in my scenario. Enforcing strict, subjective standards at the entry level naturally stifles organic discussion.
To address this without sacrificing quality across the entire board, I’d like to propose a better model:
Level 1 (general): Open to all members. Moderation here is strictly technical (removing spam, illegal content, or explicit harassment). Threads are not flagged or removed for perceived low quality or lack of formal structure, allowing for casual musings and open-ended exploration.
Level 2 (invite only): A higher-tier space where rigorous posting standards and flagging apply. Posts created by Level 2 members appear in both Level 1 and Level 2 views, but high-standard moderation only occurs within the Level 2 tier.
Member Levels: Tier status remains hidden to prevent status-driven behavior. If a member’s contributions consistently fall below standard, they can be demoted back to Level 1 rather than having their threads deleted outright. This system also rewards member contributions.
Under a system like this, low-quality posts lead to structural demotion over time rather than immediate deletion of ongoing threads. This protects community standards while preserving the effort and contributions of members who participate in good faith. Why this needed? As it stands, someone might not feel they have anything to contribute and see no reason to “risk” putting themselves out there.
