I just watched a political scientist talk on conspiracy theories. I didn’t realize but a lot seems to have come out, in terms of locked documents, on certain big events in history. Some conspiracy theories turn out to be true e.g. the infamous rewtagtae.
Yes, I’ve seen a coupla those videos. Having been raised in the 21st century it’s difficult for us to think of any construction not involving heavy machinery. However there are a few lingering doubts. Their domiciles were humble, our chalcolithic tribesmen didn’t go beyond a hut or maybe some kind of large mudhouse for the chieftain. Yet they were capable of erecting megalithic structures with astronomical significance.
Well remember all the cathedrals built without any kind of power except muscle power. No wonder the Masons were a quasi-religious cult.
There’s no tech mystery for cathedrals - masonry, architecture, engineering + allied fields were already reaping the mathematical harvest. Stonehenge was at a time, of a people, with little or no mathematics. Plus where there were grand cathedrals there were magnificent mansions and palaces.
Yeah, he first raised this in a discussion with me in one of the God discussions. His argument is that if it’s reasonable to believe that Stonehenge was intentionally created then it’s reasonable to believe that the universe was intentionally created.
The OP is thinly disguised bait.
You do know that a clump of clay didn’t smack the ground and a person formed from that, right?
You’ll have to take that up with a theologian. I’m a philosophical theist.
Philosophical theism is the belief that the Supreme Being exists (or must exist) independent of the teaching or revelation of any particular religion.[1] It represents belief in God entirely without doctrine, except for that which can be discerned by reason and the contemplation of natural laws.
Shit didn’t just fall from the sky and create Stonehenge. Stop defending that theory.
So you believe some super humans muscled 40 ton stones? You’re unnecessarily adding the assumption intelligent beings caused Stonehenge which is less parsimonious explanation than if it was the result of natural forces. Which is what I’m told when it comes to life and mind (the two most complex things we know of) being caused to exist.
I visited a meteor crater in Arizona as a kid and my dad remarked how amazing it was that the meteor didn’t hit the gift shop next to it.
That is funny. But it did make a circle and raised rocks around the circle. Is it impossible (or too improbable) for natural forces to inadvertently cause Stonehenge? Yet folks claim the same forces have no problem causing the universe, the laws of physics, life and mind to exist. Because that’s much simpler than causing something wickedly complex like stones in a circle.
When I read your OP, I thought, this poster is trying to use Stonehenge as an analogy to debunk the biological evolution of life by means of natural selection.
You’re barking up the wrong tree…this post wasn’t about evolution at all. I concede evolution is a plausible theory of how once life began to exist, it became more complex. I’m a philosophical theist not a religious one.

What your leaving out in the story of evolution is all the things that had to happen for there to be a bio-friendly planet earth in which evolution could take place. You know the universe didn’t come with an earth, stars, galaxies, solar systems, atoms, molecules, chemicals, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorous or carbon. All those things came about due to the forces of nature and the laws of physics.
Correct me if wrong but it appears you’re saying we should reject the idea Stonehenge was the result of natural mindless forces unintentionally causing Stonehenge to exist because it’s too complex. However such forces could cause the universe, life and mind to exist because that’s less complex than Stonehenge. Interesting.
To @Banno
It appears you believe that in the case of something as complex as Stonehenge, it requires the less parsimonious explanation it was intentionally caused to exist by autonomous intelligent beings as opposed to natural causes. However you believe such forces are capable of causing the most complex things we know of, the universe, life to mind to exist just not something as ‘complex’ as Stonehenge.
We already have a few active discussions on God, so I’m closing this one.
