I was responding to your historical point that American civil discourse has reached a nadir. The above is not responsive to that. In any event, MAGA is typically associated with authoritarianism by its critics as opposed to anarchism.
It’s generally accepted that polarization within a society leads to authoritarianism, not anarchy. The American Civil War could best be understood as a time of authoritarian rule as well. While the government broke off into factions, it did not collapse into no government at all.
The Confederacy operated as a centralized government, it drafted soldiers, seized railroads, printed money, suppressed dissent. The Union controlled the press, instituted an income tax, drafted soliders, suspended habeas corpus.
So, to the extent you think a civil war is around the corner, don’t expect anarchy to follow. Maybe if we’re invaded by an outside force, a natural disaster overwhelms all supporting structures, or the currency collapses or something entirely destablizes the country, we’ll get anarchy.
I’d rather use examples other than Trump because his recency interferes with his being used in an unbiased way.
