Nagel’s “The Core of ‘Mind and Cosmos’" through an Earth Centrist lens

But I don’t see it as having political or social relevance. It is “only foolosophy.”

Situation research is largely about getting a grip on terms like “consciousness.” To me it’s not like we are doing a pseudo-scientific investigation of essences or the “true meaning” of this or that sign. It’s more like a discussion of how we might minimize confusion.

IMV, the sign “consciousness” tends to be overloaded. It vaguely means something like “self-consciousness” and “intelligence” and yet also the “presence” or “quality” or “is-ness” of the world for a particular organism in the world that is therefore called “conscious.”

You say you agree with me that the postulation of qualia is confused, but then you define “qualia.” I find it cleaner and more efficient to talk instead of the quality of the world itself as it manifests to a particular organism within that world.

My claim is not representational. I’m suggesting that I find it better to avoid the internal/external framework. Yes, we need to account for the “from-a-point-of-view-ness” or “perspectivity” of perception, but I prefer to do this without invoking internal representations.

The “consciousness” of an organism is not a stuff in the world but rather the “presence” or “being” of every kind of stuff in the shared world for a sentient organism within that world.

To me it seems the other way around. This Earth created the conditions for life to occur and evolve. Earth was here before creatures and consciousness, and Earth will remain long after our biosphere, and the entire kingdom of life and awareness shrivels away.

Meaning basically. life has taught me to look at it from the opposite direction. Creatures originate upon a dynamic Earth and need to have a degree awareness to function and prosper - then Evolution continued to evolve and the rest is history.

We creatures compose our mental perception of the world we inhabit along with that sliver of it that matters to us - we don’t create the world or the universe.

What is Earth if all of it is separate phenomenon with it’s own character, standing out as individuals?

Is the sphere with all the: mountains, seas, people, etc Earth, or is that more a group of individual phenomena?

It may be that Earth is consciousness-bound.

Not sure how my words added up to that sort of idea.

It’s all woven out of the same matrix of resources and the “laws” of natural.
And of course, it’s not just the Earth. Earth turns out to be fairly extraordinary because of our specific Solar System and how it’s interacted with the systems beyond.

Poetically guess it could be said that Earth’s specialness made it bound to create conscious creatures.
… but that’s the stuff of our mindscape.

So you put your finger on the weirdest component of phenomenalism. How do we make sense of the dominant story of the world if consciousness is the being of the world ?

The basic reply is that empirical statements are about the future. So empirical statements about “the past” are “really” about the future.

My position is strange because it denies the “interior” of subjects and denies “consciousness as stuff” but it also insists on an ontological perspectivism that refuses to de-realize the “quality” of physical objects. For such a derealization makes science absurd if not impossible.

It might be worth discussing this in that old topic. I’m reluctant to re-type all of the same points.

Perhaps I’d require a philosophy degree to make sense of it.

I’m a simpleton, I accept physical reality as I experience it, aided by the insights of science. I’m enraptured by Earth’s pageant of evolution and communing with today’s nature, as in being present to it. But then I have a rural forty acres for my backyard.

My focus is on the living moment of now, and all that exoteric conjecturing about future and past doesn’t rise above words on a page, for me.

The basic idea is that our constantly present situation is deciding what the hell to do about the oncoming future.

Inquiry is largely the adjustment of our future-meeting policy. The past we can’t do anything about. But we can do something with the past: we can modify our expectation of what is coming at us and design policies to meet that expected oncoming future.

Empirical claims are “about the future” because I can only test a claim after you have made it. Your claim is scientific or empirical if it implies this future experience rather than that one.

OK I’ve spent a couple of hours on this post. Apologies for my somewhat snarky first response to it, as Thomas Nagel’s Mind and Cosmos is a book that I think is very important, and yet much maligned. In fact, I think we’re actually much closer in some respects than you may think, but I believe you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what Nagel is talking about.

The first thing I’d distinguish is science from scientism. Nagel is not attacking science, and certainly not questioning the extraordinary achievements of the physical sciences. In fact, he explicitly acknowledges their “extraordinary success (of the sciences) in their own domain.” His target is the assumption that the particular conception of nature developed by the physical sciences — a conception deliberately constructed by excluding the mental, subjective, intentional and purposive — can therefore constitute a complete account of nature.

That distinction matters throughout your reading of the piece.

You repeatedly interpret Nagel as demanding something like access to another creature’s private experience:

“I read that as an expectation that we should have the ability to know what is going on inside another’s mind.”

But that isn’t what Nagel is saying. His point is much closer to the one he made in “What Is It Like to Be a Bat?”, an essay that became famous in the 1980’s. A complete description of the neural processes associated with an experience is still a description from the outside. It tells us what is happening in the organism objectively, but it doesn’t thereby explain the subjective character of the experience — what it is like for the organism itself.

And notice that this isn’t an argument from our inability to climb inside another person’s head. It’s a question about the purported comprehensiveness of the explanation. ‘Scientism’ will claim that an objective account will leave nothing out. Nagel is saying, well, it leaves out what it is like to be an organism, what the organism’s experience of life actually is.

Note the difference!

You say:

Perhaps it can explain an enormous amount —that is not in question. But “we can explain a great deal about the neural and biological processes associated with consciousness” is not the same proposition as “we have explained why those processes are accompanied by subjective experience in the first place” or "what it means to the organism (or being) that has them.

That is the problem Nagel is pointing to. And actually, you yourself are supplying that sense, without your noticing it. You know that “what it means” to the organism is significant in its own right.

There is another important point where I think your argument slips past the actual argument. You repeatedly appeal to evolution:

“Consciousness is the product of my body living its life, and the cumulative product of half a billion years.”

But this simply restates the evolutionary history of consciousness. It doesn’t yet explain consciousness in its first-person sense.

If I say that the eye evolved through natural selection, for example, I have explained something important about how eyes came to exist. I haven’t thereby explained everything about the nature of vision. Likewise, tracing the evolutionary history of nervous systems and increasingly sophisticated information-processing capacities is enormously informative, but it doesn’t by itself settle the philosophical question of why any of that processing should be accompanied by experience. And why? Because the subjective nature of experience has been bracketed out of the scientific account since the Scientific Revolution.

That is the explanatory gap Nagel is targeting.

And I think there is an irony here. You accuse Nagel of being insufficiently attentive to biology, whereas he is actually asking whether our present conception of biology is adequate to explain the phenomenon we are trying to explain. More evolutionary detail isn’t necessarily an answer to that question. At some point one has to ask whether the explanatory framework itself is sufficient.

There is also a terminological issue that I think is worth clearing up.

You write:

“Science explains that it’s more like an emanation of biological processes and not any material thing.”

But that isn’t a scientific finding. It is a philosophical interpretation of scientific findings — and a quite substantive one. And you’re inserting that into the picture in many places. Many, or even most, evoliutionary science, would say no such thing!

In fact, you brought Mark Solms into the discussion yourself, and he makes essentially this point explicitly. As he puts it:

“The brain does not ‘produce’ consciousness in the sense that the liver produces bile, and physiological processes do not cause—or become or turn into—mental experiences through some curious metaphysical transformation.”

So when you say that “science explains that it’s more like an emanation of biological processes”, you’re going considerably further than the science itself says! Indeed, you’re asserting precisely the kind of brain-to-consciousness relation that Solms warns against assuming.

This is also why I don’t think Nick Lane provides the answer you think he does. Lane’s work is fascinating precisely because it shows how extraordinarily deep and contingent the biological story is — bioenergetics, metabolism, cellular organization, evolution, and so forth. But none of that entails that consciousness is simply reducible to those processes. Lane is doing evolutionary biology; he isn’t thereby providing a solution to the philosophical problem of consciousness, and I’m sure if I dug into his writings, I could find an example of him saying that.

In fact, I think your own position contains an interesting tension.

You say that consciousness is an “emanation” of biological processes, but you also repeatedly emphasize how much biological organization and knowledge lies beneath conscious awareness:

“my body possessed more knowledge than I do.”

I agree that there is something profoundly important here! It’s one of the major points about my ‘Mind as cause or consequence’ piece. Organisms contain vastly more capacity than conscious reflection can encompass. Contemporary biology has made that increasingly apparent. Intelligence pervades the biosphere, you could say. It’s practically panpychism!

But that still leaves open the question Nagel is asking: why should any of this information processing be conscious at all?

That isn’t answered by saying that consciousness evolved because it was useful, either. Evolution can explain why a trait was selected once the trait exists; it doesn’t automatically explain why the trait has the phenomenal character it has.

And this brings me to what I think is the biggest misreading in your post.

You write:

“Science rejects such a conceit and is content to allow the physical evidence to speak for itself.”

But that is almost exactly where Nagel would object. Science itself doesn’t say that the physical description is all that reality consists of. That’s a philosophical extrapolation from a particular scientific method.

The great achievement of modern science was partly made possible by deliberately bracketing subjective experience, meaning, intention and purpose. Nagel’s question is whether we can then turn around and say: “Since science successfully excluded these things from its descriptions, they must therefore be reducible to what remains.”

That is precisely the difference between scientism and science.

And I think your own final paragraphs actually illustrate the problem rather nicely. You write:

“truth means nothing without a recognized frame of reference.”

That sounds considerably more philosophical than you perhaps realize. You are making a claim about truth and the conditions under which truth has meaning. Science doesn’t establish that proposition. Physics itself brackets out context as far as possible, so as to analyse the interactions of precisely-defined bodies. Nor does the fact that every organism occupies its own ecological and perceptual niche establish that truth is therefore merely relative to a frame of reference.

So I wouldn’t characterize your position as “science versus Nagel.” I’d characterize it as one philosophical interpretation of science versus another.

And there is one last point I’d gently push back on. You seem to think Nagel is driven by a desire to capture something that “cannot be captured,” and therefore that he is asking science to do the impossible. But I think that misses his actual ambition. He isn’t asking physics to become omniscient. He’s asking whether our conception of nature needs to become richer if it is to explain the existence of conscious organisms.

Indeed, Nagel explicitly rejects both the idea that consciousness is simply an inexplicable accident and the idea that we therefore need divine intervention. His position is that there may be a naturalistic but non-materialist conception of nature still waiting to be developed.

That is a much more interesting position than “science can’t explain consciousness, therefore science is wrong.”

And I think this is where your own position becomes philosophically interesting. You seem to want to say that consciousness is entirely a product of biological organization while at the same time resisting the idea that consciousness is “just” another physical object. That’s where I agree with you! But once you start doing that, you are already doing philosophy rather than simply reporting on science.

So I wouldn’t call Nagel anti-science. I’d call him anti-scientism — and, in particular, opposed to the idea that the methodological abstraction that made physical science possible must also be the final ontology of nature.

That’s a much narrower claim, but also, I think, a much harder one to dismiss.

Very good response. Just to expand on one point:

This is a similar question to that raised by Huw Price and other naturalists who nonetheless oppose “bald naturalism” – the thesis that what there is, fundamentally, is the physical world. In another thread – and there’ve been so many on this general topic recently that I forget which one – someone suggested that there’s plenty of room for a “paradigm shift” in how we conceive of consciousness. This too speaks to the same point: We have to stay open to the idea that what is natural is not necessarily what is material; or, if you prefer, that “natural” is a word in search of a new application.

Why would someone resist such an idea? Because of a confusion of science with scientism, just as you explain. Science doesn’t employ the tools that would allow it to pronounce a verdict on its own scope and significance.

There is no justification for saying we currently know all that can be known about the universe, or even that we know all the types of things there are.

Okay with that bit of clarity, I think I can see what tripped me up with the “experience of the experience of another creatures experience of the living experience.” It is because the only way this question can be resolved is to climb inside another mind.

Beyond that, it seems like an impossible expectation, and for what?
Now I’m wondering, what would that final bit of knowledge gain us?

Whereas the journey of science has brought us to a collection of evidence that supports something like the CBC, Cellular Basis of Consciousness proposal by Dr. Author Reber. Not that he’s got all the answers, which he was happy to acknowledge, but the train of logic and supporting evidence is massive, and growing.
Modern science is showing us that the best way to think about our consciousness is as the interior reflection of one’s body communicating with itself.
Now start taking responsibility for yourself !

But the Hard Problem makes so much more provocative reading than trying to grapple with Earth’s Evolution and Life’s Drive to Thrive, and the origin of one’s Self.

To realize and appreciate there was a something built into first cells to create that elusive sense of, I Am, an awareness, even when based on chemotaxis. Then as systems got bigger and more complex, components became available to add complexity, specialization and ever increasing abilities as the eons raced on by.

But the thing is modern science has filled in most of the details, terra incognito is getting smaller all the time. While we’re discovering unexpected and surprising functions in old components. Take - mitochondria for instance, even impinging upon mind, meaning for someone who takes biology seriously, the divide between that biological matter and human mind is getting narrower and narrowed. While there’s still so much unexplored, meaning there’s more astounding realization to experience. And its as sure a bet as we can make, that the answer are right there in front of us, but we’re still shy on our resolution.

It’s like what I hear philosophers implying that if something isn’t 100.00% mapped out, it can be dismissed.

Meaning, despite my Grandma Moses “foolosophy” mind and perspective, we’re still left with a Hard Problem as a mirage. The Explanatory Gap. Sure it’s wonderful to discuss and can occupy our mind for ever. But that doesn’t make it a constructive tool for learning about who I am, what I am, why I am, or what the heck that overwhelming world around me is about - if its impossible to answer from the outset.

I like this stance regarding the explanatory gap - It is an illusion; mind is brain activity, and science will eventually prove it.

Although with one big change.
We know well enough about our body’s internal networks of senses and communication systems working with our brain - to justify a null hypothesis with an expectation that Mind must be a system wide interwoven, nonstop interactions on a myriad of level. Our brain is certainly central process and coordinating, but everything is done in communication with and in step with the rest of our physical body. Ergo, search for mind in the brain is futile - Mind as full body symphony.

Everything in the development of living creatures points at that.

Can you explain why that turned into a problem? Since scientists agreed that it was limited to what we could see, measure for good reasons, that are too often ignored. Science would have been impossible without that restriction.

Where is the problem? (Now that I’m caught up on the Explanatory Gap.)

Sufficient to figure out precisely what?

What needs fixing?

Certainly not without some deep reflection on why people think it’s necessary - what’s missing - how’s that going to fix anything?

I mean science has been all about measuring and repeating - that’s where the honest “objective” ends. After that we are back to thinking human minds, working within their individual and collective subjective “mindscapes”. Thing with scientists is, they’ve created a set of rules to guide an Objective-Mind - trying to screen out human ego, bias, and egotist as much as possible.

I don’t think that distinction has been examined enough.

Especially considering what seems a kind of concerted media effort to bully scientists into mysterian territory. Rather then accept limitation of what we can “know”.

No I can’t, plainly.

How has modern science’s progress at filling in the details or narrowing the gap been measured?

Has it revealed how we experience some of the things we experience, but does not yet know how we experience other things that we experience?

Has it revealed how we experience things only some of the time, but doesn’t yet show how we experience the same thing at other times?

Has it somehow narrowed the mechanism of consciousness to one of several physical events, but cannot yet figure out which one is ultimately responsible?

Has it come to understand that consciousness is the product of a combination of physical events, but cannot yet get the exact combination and/or sequence?

The answer to all of these questions, and all other questions regarding how physical events produce consciousness, is No. Understanding any degree of detail regarding how physical events produce discrimination, feedback loops, or anything else, does not touch upon consciousness. Knowing all the details that we know of neural activity does not explain why it is more than neural activity; why it is accompanied by experience.

Let’s put the statement you quoted back in context

For sake of simplifying discussion, divide the mind into a primitive mind and a meta-aware conscious mind that accepts inputs from the primitive mind.

The primitive mind is just that: a crude, primitive means for controlling an organism. A variation of which resides in many lower life forms that have not developed a conscious mind. The primitive mind sends messages/requests to the conscious mind. Subjective experiences are feelings/emotions that are sent at the same time. At it’s most crude it’s a carrot and stick method of control: feel good / feel bad. What you refer to as “evolved history” is simply a part of the primitive mind that exists in lower life forms as well.

The conscious mind is free to evaluate these messages/requests and subsequently veto them, run simulations, create alternatives, etc. Consciousness is purely meta-awareness.

Utilizing a functional model such as this simplifies everything. The hard problem no longer exists. Nor do the rabbit holes that Nagel and Reber went down trying to explain the hard problem.

In what ways has it changed your conceptualization of consciousness and how you think of the hard problem?

Give me a few days.
Although the short take is, drained of the emotional distractions, 'every time I dig a little deeper into the consensus details of the philosophy around the Hard Problem (D-N-C), the more I know I’m on the right track, the trick is in the explaining. Fortunately, it turns out I echo what some established serious thinkers have written already.

I’m in the process of trying to learn about a couple of them now, before writing anything substantial.
