So, yes, in the US, “cunt” is particularly offensive, but it’s not universal, so that’s why the responses aren’t sympathetic here.
My research shows “nonce” in the UK and “rock spider” are offensive pedophilia insults. I’ll defer to the locals to correct me.
I wonder if “cunt” could be re-fanged with enough descriptive terms, like calling someone a dripping gaping cunthole. Surely that would get you tossed from the fish and chip shop.

I find your use of “American” offensive. As a person born and raised in the continent that spans from Alaska to Patagonia: America, I reserve the right to call myself American.
To refer to people from the country called USA as “American” is offensive.
I don’t find playing the “I’m offended” game particularly fruitful, much less the “someone might get offended” game.

And folks, here’s what I think. If I’m the member whose username contains the word cunt and I see this thread dedicated to my username, and I read the arguments for and against it, I would graciously volunteer to change my username because to me, the camaraderie or harmony among the fellow members is more important to me than having a name that’s causing enough discomfort to create a thread.
I love the relationship more than I love my bombastic personality.
I advocate the term “Mercan” for such folk.
That’s how they mostly pronounce it anyway, and it covers other things.
I think the main point here is that the new user made a pun. Some consider it inappropriate; others don’t, and other folk, (whose native language is not English like me), see it as mundane. Again, I thought it was inappropriate towards Kant’s name, but as I read above, this is how Germans actually pronounce it. Therefore, there shouldn’t be any problem with the username at all.
On the other hand, using “nigger” as a username is clearly inappropriate. The user lacks an intelligent pun, and their intentions would hardly receive support.
