Well this is where I get mystical and perhaps communitarian. Why would I want to do to others what I personally find painful or abhorrent? This maxim intuitively feels right (emotivism?). If I flesh it out, this is connected to respect and “first, do no harm,” and a sense of solidarity that we are all here together and essentially share a common vulnerability as human beings. I also would say that I don’t gain any form of satisfaction harming others and violence generally repels me.
However… in some circumstance I would cheerfully retaliate and be violent if pressed by others. I’m not a turn the other cheek guy in all cases.
Like almost all people, I’ve a product of now and here: my preferences are shaped by culture, upbringing and by Christian education, particularly the parables. We all inhabit an environment that is a kind of bricolage of transcultural and historical influences we cannot really escape.
