To make just this point that there is no “real” 6.
But you missed something crucial. You had them all lined up. I hoped you would connect this image to our discussion of time above.
When you are in the world, you might see just this scribble or that scribble, probably only one scribble at a time. But in each case you see the “same” numeral 6 in the different scribbles. To be a particular scribble means not being the other particular scribbles.
The numeral 6 is always a particular scribble, so that other scribbles it could be are not there perceptually. So the numeral 6 is not “completely” there.
We can write the “same” numeral 6 in brand new ways tomorrow. Each perceived scribble is a fresh event of an “old” object.
Do you see where time comes in ?
Are you tempted to tell me that math is also in my head ? Do you think we could do any real math without scribbles or some other perceptual objects that play the same role ?
When I say that a thing “shows itself,” I don’t mean it has a “desire” to show itself.
Perceptions “happen” to you. In general, you turn the corner and things are just there in ways that may surprise you.
Philosophers often assume that the world they perceive is in their head. Is life like that ?
I hoped that you would notice that those particular scribbles were not all possible scribbles of the numeral 6.
There are “unseen scribbles” that are “hidden” in the future. There are scribbles in the vast world that you will never see that others will see.
It’s not only that. These scribbles ( and their electronic and typographical versions ) play a primary role in practical life.
Some people vaguely think of “true external reality” in terms of math, but they don’t perhaps think of something so basic as the way numerals are there in the world.
They leap away from the simple to something distant from ordinary reality.
Most of the world is invisible for me, because it is far away. But other people in the vast world are seeing many of the pieces that I can’t see. Why ? Well their eyes are close to the pieces they see —and the lights are on or the sun is out.
Do you believe that the world that is there for you is also there for many other people ?
Do you see the world through their eyes ?
The world that is in darkness for you is in the light for other people. And the reverse.
How do we “share objects” ?
What does it mean to see the same chair ? Or the same numeral 6 ?
What does it mean to play the same tune on different instruments at different times ?
The numerals are just a part of language. It is not in the world.
Wouldn’t it be the case of having hallucination, if you think numbers are in the world? If you still think they are, then prove and demonstrate it.
Numbers don’t manifest to vision or reality until you write them. They are not hidden. They don’t exist yet. Only existence can be hidden. Nonexistence cannot be hidden.
Time only comes to issue when prompted by some necessity. Normally people don’t think about time in daily life.
To attach time on all the motions and procedures are conscious, unnatural and intended act. It is not a natural way of ordinary living or thinking.
It means you know it is your wife. You know it is the chair, and keyboard. You don’t need to think they are inside of your head. That sounds not quite making sense, even to imagine.
The point was to prove and demonstrate your claim on numbers exist in the world, or the world is made up of numbers. But you seem to be talking about something totally unrelated. What is your real point?
What do you mean by this? Do you mean you don’t understand my question?
If that is what you are talking about, then the questions was formed on the basis on your previous post out of the blue.
I thought your post was totally out of the blue, and ambiguous on what your saying. What frame work are you talking about, or why on earth you think you have a right to tell anyone how to frame question, was mysterious as if it were some hallucinating comment.
You need to make yourself crystal clear in your posts, so everyone will understand what you mean. Otherwise, misinterpretation will happen, and it is not the readers’ fault.
It means that only if you write ambiguous postings out of the blue, then misinterpretations can happen. So, point was, try to be crystal clear on what you are writing.
I was genuinely interested in seeing your proof and demonstrations on numbers exist in the world. Because I could counter prove, they don’t.
